Thread: Lefties

    Lefties

While watching Haanif play in the MM event, I realized how strange it was watching an MU player who is left-handed. As far as I can recall, there have been very few lefties who played significant roles on MU teams over the years.

I then tried to come up with an all-lefty, all-star MU team.

Point Guard - I can't think of a single starting point guard in the last 50-55 years who was left-handed, so a two guard would have to play the point.

Two Guard - DJ-O immediately pops into my head, but there is also Benny Moore and Joe Mimlitz. Then there's Rosey, despite the fact that he never started. And Dave Delsman, though he never started either and probably averaged fewer mpg than Rosey did.

Small Forward - Kerry Trotter is the only one I can think of.

Power Forward - Trevor Powell played primarily the 4 if memory serves.

Center - The only one I can think of is Odell Ball.

I am sure I'm missing at least a couple of left-handers, but based on the names above, my all-time southpaw team would be DJ-O, Benny Moore, Trotter, Powell, and Ball.

Anbody care to add to the list. It's hard to believe we've had only seven or eight lefties in over 50 years with maybe a half dozen who were ever regular starters. But that might be the case.

    Gary Rosenberger and Mark Anglavar.

    Wasn't Mike Flory a lefty?

I mentioned "Rosey." Forgot about Anglavar, though I'm not sure how I forgot. I might put him in the starting line up ahead of Benny Moore.

Both Anglavar and Moore were primarily outside shooters, though Moore was, if memory serves, more athletic. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but did Moore finish his career at MU, or did he transfer? Or did he come to MU from a junior college? I am pretty certain he only played for MU for a couple of years.

Moore played two years after spending two at Dodge City (KS) Community College.

Thanks. I obviously also forgot about Flory. I guess I'd have him back up Trotter at SF and Powell at PF.

Oddly enough, when trying to find info on Benny Moore, I came across this photo of both Benny Moore and Flory playing against each other when Flory played for Colorado before transferring to MU.

Paul Newman, a 6'9 center from Ohio who played at MU for 1-2 years in the early 80's before transferring to UNC-Wilmington was a lefty, as I recall.
