I'm sad for the players who had the potential but for a variety of reasons never were able to grab the brass ring. There are hundreds of stories of players across the country who had injuries, drug problems or other personal demons that didn't end well. What's the percentage of NBA players who end up in bankruptcy?

So much depends on person, place and time. Who are the people with a player's ear? Can the player put the circus atmosphere of stardom in perspective?

Doc clearly has done it. You see others like Ulice Payne and Marc Marotta who have cashed in on the opportunity without making it to the NBA.

There was an article on ESPN or Grantland about a football player who finally cut off his family. His financial adviser figured they had cost him $1 million in his first year. What finally did it was when he offered to buy a house for his mother and stepfather to live in for about $300,000, and they came up with one costing $800,000. Lots of athletes have family members who descend like locusts, and many are poorly advised. Meanwhile, some of the smarter ones like Rivers and Payne invest their money more wisely. The leagues are aware of it and concerned about it. Particularly in the NBA, for many players who come from poor backgrounds, they are the main source of significant money for their friends and families. That appears to be part of what broke up DWade's first marriage.
