Excellent read. Al's games were usually always close. He didn't like to run up scores on the opposition to make the oppossing coach look bad ("coaches are all bricklayers in the same union").
As his mother, Winnie McGuire stated after Al retired, 'You got out clean Alfie...you got out clean!".

Al had FBI speak to his team before each season about gambling.

Perhaps this was all part of why Al and the NCAA were at odds over the years. I would have wanted to say FU to the NCAA if they were responsible for me being investigated by the FBI and the NCAA may have wanted to pull Al's chain because they perceived him as outside the association's sphere of control.
