    Memphis Hoops

Austin Nichols, ranked #49 by scout, is going to Memphis.

While I am very excited about our class, Memphis is looking loaded coming into the Big East.
Memphis 2013 (Scout rankings) - Nick King #20, Kuran Iverson #34, Austin Nichols #49, and Rashawn Powell #86

Glad to see they will come to the Big East strong - a great place to road trip for a game.

Right now I get excited every time a current BE of future BE member gets a commit, we need all the strong teams we can get to show we still belong. I think most BE members see it because they know this league was always good, but we need to show the nation that we are still that strong. I don't think we are as strong as the ACC, but we certainly can keep up with the others in basketball.

On top of that, they also have Markel Crawford. Crawford doesn't show up in the Scout rankings, but clocks in at #50 with Rivals and #56 with Prepstars.

That is 5 top 100 kids.

Losing Syracuse and ND is huge but with the rise of Temple, SMU and Memphis, we may well have a BB conference that is equal to the ACC.

I think we will lack top end teams... The ACC has Duke, UNC, and Syracuse... You can get that on most years one or two of those teams will be top 10 teams... The only team we have like that right now is Louisville.

Have to disagree and would favor the ACC in this one. Don't forget about losing Pitt and WVU (Big 12).

All without one NCAA victory under his tenure....hmmm....

I did a quick run down of the six power conferences over the last 5 years, what I did was looked at the final top 25 rankings of the season and I counted how many top 25 teams, top 10 teams, and top 5 teams each conference would have had assuming all the changes were in place (Pitt, ND and Cuse to ACC, WVU to B12, Utah to P10, and UM and Temple to BE), this is what I found:

    2007-2008
    Conference: Top 25: Top 10: Top 5:
    ACC 5 2 1
    Big East 5 2 1
    Big 10 3 1 0
    Big 12 2 2 1
    SEC 2 1 1
    Pac 10 3 2 1

    2008-2009
    Conference: Top 25: Top 10: Top 5:
    ACC 7 3 2
    Big East 4 3 3
    Big 10 3 1 0
    Big 12 1 1 0
    SEC 2 1 0
    Pac 10 4 0 0

    2009-2010
    Conference: Top 25: Top 10: Top 5:
    ACC 4 2 2
    Big East 3 1 0
    Big 10 4 2 1
    Big 12 4 3 1
    SEC 4 1 1
    Pac 10 0 0 0

    2010-2011
    Conference: Top 25: Top 10: Top 5:
    ACC 5 4 3
    Big East 3 1 0
    Big 10 3 1 1
    Big 12 4 2 1
    SEC 4 0 0
    Pac 10 2 0 0

    2011-2012
    Conference: Top 25: Top 10: Top 5:
    ACC 4 4 2
    Big East 3 0 0
    Big 10 6 3 1
    Big 12 1 1 1
    SEC 4 2 2
    Pac 10 0 0 0

Now with all of this being said this certainly is not an indicator of future success, but it does show that they have a lot of REALLY good basketball programs and it is going to be hard for the Big East to match up, especially in that top 5 - 10 range.

Sorry for the formatting issue, I did this in an excel spreadsheet and I tried to get it to come over nicely but it appears no matter what I do it gets a bit jumbled up.

    Pitt is dead to me.
