(OT) High School Track and Field

Rice Lake junior Kenny Bednarek became the first high school runner in Wisconsin history to run under 47 seconds in the 400 meters. Bryan Jones of Nicolet set the state record of 47.12 seconds back in 1990. Bednarek ran a scorching 46.19 at the WIAA sectional in Medford yesterday and had run 47.0 seconds at the regional. He also posted a 21.34 seconds time in the 200 meters and the 4x400 meter relay team, which he anchors, ran 3 minutes and 21 seconds to win the sectional.

Rice Lake sure turns out some exemplary T&F athletes if he and Wally are any indication. Is Bednarek the guy you posted about last year as well? I have to think that 46.19 is in the top 10 nationally this year. The 4 x 400 time is impressive as well.

Too early too tell where he is going to college?

He was listed #7 nationally on one list I saw and he and a kid from Utah were the only 2 from what I would consider northern climates.

Add this guy to the Rice Lake alums.

Yes indeed, Ted is up there on that list... Ellenson, Ellenson, Ellenson, Bednarek, Baxter...

I was talking to a few high school track coaches over the weekend, they were in disbelief. For a record to be broken after 17 years, that is amazing, but for a 400m record to be broken by a full second? You would expect it to be broken by .02, .03 but .93? That is insane!

Divison 2 results in for the first day of the state meet:

Ken Bednarek won his heat in both the 200 and 400 meters in 21.34 and 47.71 and is seeded 1st going into tomorrows final. Rice Lake's 4x400 meter relay also is seeded first going into tomorrows final as they posted a 3:20.27 time. I doubt he runs in the 4x100 meter relay as Rice Lake is seeded 6th going into tomorrows final without him. He's one of the top two 100 meter runners in Division 2.

Will be interested to see Bayport junior Cordell Tinch later today and tomorrow as he's a threat to place high in the D1 high jump, long jump, triple jump and 110 meter hurdles. Wisconsin basketball recruit Kobe King and Nobal Days will compete against Tinch in the high jump.

You can only be entered in 3 running events (plus one field or 3 field plus one running), so he could not run the 4x100.

Thanks. Don't know the track and field rules.

Tinch placed in second place at 6-8 in the high jump, won the long jump at 24'-2" and had the top time in the 110 meter high hurdles in the 14.2-14.3 range after yesterdays semi's and is the favorite in the triple jump as he's gone over 49' this year. David Greenwood type impact.

That's impressive. He could do some damage in a college track program, if he so chooses. Decathlon potential, plus the individual events.

Bednarek ran 21.61 to beat Kyle Thomas of River Valley, who ran 21.62 in the 200. Not sure if it's official yet.

Tinch finished 2nd in then110 hurdles and the went 49"-2 1/2" in the triple jump to beat Carter from Oak Creek who went 48'-6".
