Blockton is BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Newcomer earns her 10th consecutive weekly accolade

    NEW YORK
    – Marquette University women’s basketball freshman Allazia Blockton has been selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season and earns her 10th consecutive weekly award, the league office announced on Monday.

Blockton etched her name into the Marquette record book on Sunday, becoming the all-time freshman scoring leader with 416 points thus far. Angel Robinson previously held the standard of 399, set during the 2007-08 campaign. The Milwaukee, Wis. native, led MU to its fourth and fifth consecutive victories, knocking off a pair of teams which currently sit in a second-place tie in the league standings. The rookie averaged 18 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in wins over St. John’s and Seton Hall. She totaled 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals against the Red Storm on Friday before going for 21 points and 10 rebounds with her eighth double-double this season against the Pirates on Sunday. She is just 112 points shy of the BIG EAST freshman scoring record, set by Providence’s Kerri Chatten in 1994-95.

Blockton was also named College Sports Madness’ BIG EAST Player of the Week following her performance.

The Golden Eagles will take their five-game winning streak on the road and face Georgetown Friday, Feb. 5 at 6:05 p.m. Central time before traveling to Villanova for a Noon CT matchup. Both games will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

You have to give Coach Kieger a ton of credit. She is in the midst of a complete tear down and rebuild with the youngest team in DI (8 frosh!). Based on what I've seen she's way ahead of schedule. No reason to believe this team cannot compete for a NCAA berth next year and might even sneak in to the WNIT this year.

That team looked godawful at Madness. Great job by Kieger.

Four freshmen and a junior in the starting line up. Five players were averaging double figures through last Friday.

Sandy's sister is Nadine Heideman. She gets a ton of playing time as well as one of the freshman and has improved quite a bit.

This team as mentioned is really young and make a lot of mistakes, but they push the ball up the court and score a ton. Could be a really good team in two years.

Could be a really good team next year. They've won five in a row - no easy task.
