Just looking at my first stat sheet, MU with 5 turnovers in first 9 minutes.
Luke is owning them down low, StJ starting to get a little over-physical with him, need to keep pounding it in.
We simply turn the ball over way too much. It's almost embarrassing.
MU down 5 at the 7:59 mark, key for the Johnnies is 10 pts off of turnovers.
Turnovers are bad, but when you look at it, out of the 7, 6 are from freshmen.
Carter - 2
Cheatham - 2
Ellenson - 2
Wilson - 1
It will improve with experience.
Matt Heldt with a putback - got to love it!
I don't think St. John's has ever shot this well from the outside.
at the 3:48 mark
MU up to 9 turnovers - need to protect the ball!
Score is 27-29, more than half of MU's points are in the paint, keep pumping it in even if Matt is the one in there!
St. John's is at 43.3% (13-30) with 60% from 3pt (6-10).
With that 3pt now 46.9% (15-32) and 63.6% (6-11)
Wojo sitting both Henry and Luke at the same time too long. What's the point of protecting them if you let SJU build a ten point lead anyway?
Man that was ugly. St John's is a horrible 3 point shooting team and they made 7 of 11 in the first half.
We can't match their quickness and can't score against the zone.
Halftime comments...
One person I won't name told me that no one uses a ball fake anymore, get the ball and they know exactly what you are going to do. Said everytime Luke shows a ball fake he will go to his right. A former player added that even McIilvaine had the 'Earthquake Shake'.
On the former players - Bo Ellis getting it done in his new role. Sitting courtside today are Earl Tatum, Bo Ellis, Amal McCaskil, Aaron Hutchins, Artie Green, Rob Logtermann. Love to see former players coming back.
On my way back up to my media perch I witnessed not one, not two, but three members of the Fighting 218 YAWNING!
Coming into the game St. John's was shooting 40% on the season, 31% from three.
As of now they are shooting 51% and 63.6%.
SJU just way to quick for us.
Off comes the coat. Wants better defense.
Haanif needs to attempt a 3 once in awhile.
Looked at the Pre-Game stat sheet they hand out to media, it says .314.
Just looked up their stats on ESPN, also .314.
Haanif needs to stop travelling. I think 3 of his 4 turnovers are travelling calls, two of which were pretty bad.
At the last TV timeout for AL's Day they introduced three players that played for AL, Joe Thomas, Earl Tatum and Bo Ellis. Could have added Jerry Homan as he is at every game too.
Odd question about Henry, when was the last time you saw a "7 footer" wear 'low-tops'?
Update on JJ?
Henry has had a bad few minutes here. Looks outclassed against quick guys.
Anyone watching on tv, was there a replay of Luke's foul? Was it a good call?
Finally showed a replay at the BC, it was Henry's foul - bad call.
MU playing with fire on defense, look panicked when on offense. Need to calm down and control the game!
Just can't pull away. Need defensive stops and then be efficient on the offensive end.
Luke has become a machine. His last hoop was a beautiful left handed shot, now he powers it in and picks up the foul. Still can't figure out why he got called for his 4th, and as I type he picks up his 5th... OUCH!
Wojo is lucky he didn't pick up a T. MU scores, everyone heads down court except one ref. Wojo gets on the court, starts slapping the floor and coaches his guys. Ref runs right into him, basically grabs Wojo and pushes him off the court. Wojo did not react favorably, ref could have T'd him.
Game getting out of control, refs need to whistle quicker.
Bad call on the turnover. Yes, Cheatham lost it but it looked like one of the StJ players was slapping at the ball while standing out of bounds.
Glad they are taking a look at it.
Glad St John's came back down to earth with their shooting in 2nd half, a lot had to do with MU's D, kudos to the guys for stepping up and playing tough D.
Can't believe how man fans are heading to the exits with 40 seconds to go.
And MU wins it 81-75.
Good win.
Happy to get the win.....still waiting for us to play a full 40 minute complete game.
Might not be in the cards this year.
Duane and Henry really stepped up in the 2nd half.
Turnovers on both sides were brutal.
With 8 minutes to go in the game, MU had 17 TO's. 14 were from Freshman (Carter, Haanif, Henry). Have to hope that gets better.
Hey guys - had another commitment and don't have time to watch on dvd. Can I get a little synopsis - pros/cons, etc? Thanks!
