The quote about the door being open for Elijah relates to the Jewish holiday of Passover.
During the seder (service plus meal), there are times when the participants drink a cup of wine - four total. The door to the outside is always left open at least a crack "for Elijah" so that Elijah can drink from the special cup of wine in the center of the table - the cup no one else drinks from. It is not unusual for one or more of the participants to claim that the level of wine has gone down a tad during the seder - the implication being that Elijah entered the festivities and partook of a tiny sip of the wine.
Hope that helps.
