• Marquette lands Philly PG Traci Carter

On Tuesday Marquette Head Coach Steve Wojciechowski hit it big once again when he added highly touted point guard Traci Carter to his 2015 recruiting class. Marquette had been in need of a pure point guard, and Carter certainly fits the bill. The 6’0 rising star from Life Center Academy selected Marquette over the likes of UConn, Xavier and Memphis.

The addition of Carter gives Wojciechowski all five positions in the 2015 recruiting class with C Matt Heldt, PF Henry Ellenson, Wings Haanif Cheatham and Sacar Anim to go along with Carter, a PG.

When it comes to the recruitment of Carter, Marquette got in late but landed the 6’0 four star recruit because of the efforts of Wojciechowski and his staff. Having played point guard at Duke and in the NBA, Wojo is a great fit for Carter according to his mentor Donnie Carr. “Wojo is the perfect coach for Traci. They both share the same passion and tenacity in their approach to the game. Ever since Marquette and Wojo first got involved with Traci he knew he could learn from him. Wojo had come out to see him a couple of times and every time they talked, Wojo explained his plans for Traci and how he would develop him, knew he was the right coach to learn from because he played the same position at a high level at Duke for Coach K and in the NBA. Then when he was on his visit and realized that he would be learning from coaches like Travis Diener, Brett Nelson and Justin Gainey who all played the same position at a high level, he knew it was the right place for him. He felt the whole staff was just too much for him to pass up.”

Having played basketball at a high level Carr has seen a lot of players in his days and feels that Carter is capable of playing at a high level and will be a perfect fit in the Big East. “Traci has what it takes to play on both sides of the ball, which is why he is such a good fit for Coach Wojo’s style. He is an unbelievable competitor with a great skillset. He has a toughness, he has quickness and his and speed and foot speed are what sets him apart. Defensively he is very active and is great at anticipating and getting into the passing lanes, which make him very tough to deal with. Offensively he has the ability to get into the lane. The Big East is an up-tempo league which really fits his game. When you look at teams like Villanova, Creighton, St. John’s…these teams really like to get up and down the court, and that is Traci’s game, he has the speed and quickness to play in the open floor.”

Carr has been mentoring Carter since he first met him in 7th grade, and is proud of how far Traci has come and much he has grown. “He has really come a long way, and when I look at Traci I am most proud of his perseverance and character. They always say that adversity reveals character, and that defines Traci right there. He has persevered through some very tough times. What has really made the difference is that he has allowed people to help him. From his high school coaches, his AAU coaches, the people at Roman Catholic, the people at Life Center, DelGreco Wilson and myself, Traci has been like a sponge. He has really showed an incredible willingness to learn, which is really what has shaped him into who he is today.”
