• Deonte Burton and John Dawson to Leave Marquette

    MILWAUKEE -
Marquette's Men's basketball program announced to day with a press release and through Twitter that sophomores Deonte Burton and John Dawson are transferring immediately at the conclusion of the first semester.

Dawson's transfer does not surprise anyone, as the Clovis, NM native was far from home and only played for four minutes so far this season. Dawson was brought to MU by Brad Autry and Buzz Williams, both no longer with Marquette.

Burton's departure on the other hand came as a surprise to the Marquette community. The sophomore averaged 16 minutes per game this year and was listed by many of the national pundits as one of this season's potential breakout players. Burton is from Milwaukee and played his high school ball at Milwaukee Vincent. Burton was having a tough semester as he lost his mother to cancer prior to the start of the season, and he just didn't seem to adapt to Steve Wojciechowski's system.

The losses are expected to have an impact on an already short handed team, despite the fact that Luke Fischer is now cleared to play.

Burton, Dawson Leaving Marquette Men’s Basketball Team
Departures Leave MU With Eight Active Scholarship Players

    Milwaukee –
Sophomores Deonte Burton and John Dawson of the Marquette University men’s basketball team have decided to leave the program and will transfer after the conclusion of the first semester (Dec. 14), head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Tuesday afternoon.

“We appreciate all that Deonte and John have contributed to the program since our staff arrived in April,” Wojciechowski said. “We will do everything we can to help them make the next step in their respective careers and wish them nothing but the best in the future.”

Burton appeared in all eight of the team’s games this season and contributed 6.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game off the bench in 16.1 minutes per outing. Dawson played in the team’s season-opening win over UT Martin this year after seeing action in 24 games off the bench in 2013-14.

The Golden Eagles do add the services of 6-11 center Luke Fischer, who becomes eligible on Dec. 16 against Arizona State after transferring from Indiana last season.
