Williams never quite hit it off with Marquette Coach Buzz Williams and key members of Marquette's basketball community, but what can not be overlooked is a key piece in Marquette's move, along with the other Catholic schools, in leaving, then resurrecting the Big East.
Several in Marquette's Athletic Department were shocked by the news which came to them in inter-office e-mail as Marquette is enjoying a great deal of success in all sports, not just basketball. But when your department survives on basketball and donations, everyone needs to be on the same page, and it appears that was not the case.
In a surprise twist, former athletic Director Bill Cords was named the interim Athletic Director. Marquette saw a great deal of success under Cords' leadership, including a trip to the Final Four and the building of the AL McGuire Center. Cords retired in 2007, only to resurface as Athletic Director of Brookfield Academy.
So where does this put Marquette now? with an interim President, Interim Athletic Director, no provost and absent a few key Deans, Marquette has some decisions to make.
So who will be the next full time athletic director at Marquette? Some think they will look to bring in an up-and-comer from a major university, but many think it is time for Marquette to give Deputy Athletic Director Mike Broeker a shot. Broeker came to Marquette from an NBA job 11 years ago, and is the one constant that has been with Marquette through it all.....
- Bill Cords retiring...
- Steve Cottingham's hiring...
- Tom Crean leaving...
- Buzz Williams' hiring...
- Fr. Wild's retiring...
- Fr. Pilarz' hiring...
- Steve Cottingham's resigning...
- Larry Williams' hiring...
- Fr. Pilarz' resigning...
- Larry Williams resigning
Mike Broeker has been through it all with Marquette, and would be an outstanding hire. Whichever way they turn for the new AD, there is no questioning that this is a critical hire for Marquette.
