• Burton to Sign Letter of Intent Wednesday

Vincent High School will be buzzing with excitement even before the regular basketball season begins. While students and staff will be milling about throughout the building, Deonte Burton will be the center of attention around noon on Wednesday.

With the stroke of a pen, Burton is expected to sign a National Letter of Intent to Marquette to play for the Golden Eagles on the first day of the national signing day period. He will be one of two City Conference products to join Marquette for the 2013-14 season along with junior college transfer and former Milwaukee Pulaski player Jameel McKay. Whitefish Bay Dominican star Duane Wilson is expected to sign with Marquette too.

The Golden Eagles are looking to add some familiarity to their squad, which would help boost attendance and help shy away past criticism of not going after local players. Burton was on the radar of the Marquette coaching staff for the last two years.

Burton's expected signing will help create a void on the team to cover the losses of key starters and reserves that will depart from the Marquette team after this season and next season.

What's more important to Burton is that he will be able to play in front of friends and family, and expect the ticket requests to increase because it will be lots of family and friends waiting in line. If he can adapt to coach Buzz Williams' system and hang in there without the thought of transferring when things don't always go his way, then he'll be a better young man and walk away with a degree.
