• Whiz Kids Summer League: Week 1

All the local high school stars are taking a break from AAU competition and joining their high school teammates to play in the Whiz Kids Summer Basketball League at MSOE.

There will be no shortage of competition around the area, and judging from what I saw recently, these guys are ready to go. With wall-to-wall action on three courts at the same time, you can watch all the city and suburban talent play in doubleheaders Tuesdays and Thursdays.

State Div. 1 champs Germantown lost a handful of quality seniors from their squad, but as long as they have incoming senior Luke Fischer, they will be the team to beat in the summer and during the regular season. But remember, the Warhawks soldiered on when the Indiana recruit was out with a hand injury and still didn't miss a beat during their undefeated 2011-12 season.

If you missed Thursday's action between the two state finalists in Div. 1 between the Warhawks and runner-up Milwaukee King on Court 3, you didn't miss much. King had Austin Malone-Mitchell and a smaller lineup. Germantown, with Fischer and more size, dominated the Generals this time around as they won by double digits.

Another interesting matchup was the late game on Court 1 between Milwaukee Vincent and East Troy. Nate Dodge was one guy Vincent had to focus on as well as 6-foot-9 brothers Brett and Alex Prahl. All three were in the lineup at the same time and gave Vincent some matchup problems.

Demetrius Woodley picked up a couple of fouls trying to guard Dodge. Deonte Burton carried the team in the first half. Without a supporting cast, the burden will fall on Burton to hold the Vikings together.

The Vincent summer league coach got a technical foul for arguing with the referees in what he thought were one-sided calls against his team and was asked to leave the gym.

New Vincent coach Marquis Hines leaned up against the wall, smiling, knowing that he couldn't step in and take over because head coaches can't coach their teams in the summer. The team was coached by the school's football coach. The Vikings, who were down at halftime came back and won by eight points.

It will be interesting to see who will be the frontrunners for the championship as we enter the second week of competition.
