Senior Day
Jae Crowder
Darius Johnson Odom
Senior day is always something special, and Saturday's match up with Georgetown is no different. It will be the last time Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson Odom will play in the Bradley Center for the Golden Eagles. It will be the last chance Marquette has to earn the #2 seed in the Big East conference tournament. It will be the last time fans can show their appreciation for the hard work and effort these two seniors have put in for their team.
Jae Crowder: "I want to be remembered as a guy who came to work every day, responsible for what he did on and off the court, just someone who worked every day. I don't think I"
Darius Johnson Odom: "I will feel very emotional about it, not because it is our last game, but because we have never won on senior night since I have been here. Me & Jae want to be known as two guys who no one knew who came here from Juco and had an impact on everybody on and off the court."
Buzz Williams: "I have a hard time on senior night because I know I'm not saying goodbye, and I try so hard to say the right things. I want people to remember these two as Lion Chasers. There are those chased by lions, and those that chase the lions, I want these two to be remembered as Lion Chasers."
Well, they will have their work cut out for them. Georgetown is a very talented team, and anyone who watched the Marquette - Cincinnati game this week knows what a zone defense can do to Marquette, and Georgetown will be running a lot of zone defenses. Is Jae Crowder concerned? "If I was coaching against us, I would play a zone because of the lack of success we have had against zones. Zones can hurt the way we play. I don't know why, we are prepared, we just need to keep playing our game, whether it is a zone or not."
Marquette's uptempo style of play will be tested with fresh bodies, Georgetown plays a pretty consistent eight-man rotation. They will try to slow the game down, while Marquette tries to speed it up.
Defensively - Georgetown's zones frustrates opponents and force them to take ill-advised/contested shots. One of the keys to their zone is #21, senior Jason Clark, who defends the point. He will challenge Junior Cadougan trying to force Marquette wide in their offense, keeping them out of the paint. To counter this, Marquette may try to start the offense off center as opposed to coming up at the top of the key. Georegtown also does an incredible job of shifting and switching people within their defense, which is something that MU has also had trouble with over the course of the year.
Offensively - you have seen Georgetown before. The key to their offense is ball movement, and you will see a lot of it. Back door cuts, give and go, pick and roll - that is how they play. They will often make defenders look foolish as they screen, switch and rotate on the offensive end. One thing to keep an eye on though, is when they are able to really spread the defense, Clark really can get to the hole. He has an explosive first step and get get to the hole quick, before the lane closes up.
Davante Gardner - Buzz says he is getting better, 22 minutes in practice yesterday, and more to come today. Will he play? "Slim chance" says Buzz, but then later said that he might be able to go 4-5 possessions, maybe 7 off of adrenaline, but his conditioning is not where it should be.
Here is the tale of the tape....
