NABC Hosting Annual Suits & Sneakers Weekend

This Friday through Sunday (Jan. 27-29) is the annual Coaches vs. Cancer® Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend, a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Participating NABC member coaches will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their suits during this weekend’s games to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Fans may support this cause by texting COACH to 20222 from any wireless phone to make a $5.00 donation toward Coaches vs. Cancer and help in the search for a cure. For more information, visit the Coaches vs. Cancer Facebook page, facebook.com/coachesvscancer.

Golden Eagles Keep Ball To Themselves Against USF

Marquette finished with a season-low five turnovers in the victory over USF Tuesday night, while creating 22 miscues by the Bulls at the defensive end.

The game marked just the second time (vs. Jacksonville, Nov. 28) this season MU concluded a game with fewer than 10 turnovers. Tuesday’s total was the fewest since Marquette gave it away on two occasions in an 89-81 loss at Pittsburgh on Jan. 8, 2011.

Two of the team’s turnovers came in the closing minutes against USF when the game’s outcome had already been decided.

    Marquette Building An Impressive Resume

In the midst of a conference winning streak of at least five games for the third time under fourth-year head coach Buzz Williams, the Golden Eagles have moved into a share of second place in the BIG EAST Conference.

Through games of Jan. 25, Marquette is ranked ninth in the RPI and the team’s strength of schedule is rated 17th-toughest in the nation. Two of the team’s losses have come on the road to squads (Georgetown and Syracuse) ranked in the top-10 at the time of the matchup. The Golden Eagles also own a pair of wins versus top-25 opponents, defeating rival Wisconsin on the road and Louisville at home.

Three of the team’s four losses to this point in 2011-12 have come on the road. The combined record of the squads MU has fallen short against is 64-17.

Buzz Williams Collects 100 Career Victories

When the final buzzer sounded at the end of Tuesday night’s 67-47 win over USF, head coach Buzz Williams claimed possession of his 100th victory as head coach.

He has compiled an 86-41 mark at Marquette in just over three seasons, which includes a 38-24 record in league play. The Golden Eagles are an impressive 54-11 under Williams in the friendly confines of the Bradley Center.

Williams was 14-17 at New Orleans in his first season as head coach in 2006-07. He claimed his first career victory with the Privateers on Nov. 11 2006 when UNO downed Jacksonville State 66-54.
