SI has a story out about the SI covers that never were. You see, they were set with their college preview with regional covers featuring UNC, Kansas and Kentucky, but Kansas City won the World Series in 5 games, so the cover got bumped. Story still there, but cover was bumped.

So what about an SI cover with MU that was bumped? Difference is, with this year's college preview, the content is all still there, just the cover is missing. In the MU cover that never was, the cover and the story were dumped.

Bo Elllis was going to be the cover story in SI as "The Best College Freshman in America!" In January of 1974 they did the interview, they did the photo shoot, they did it all. And then the unthinkable happened.... January 19th, 1974, Notre Dame beat UCLA to snap their 88 game winning streak. SI dumped the story and ran with the UCLA-ND story and Bo as the "Best Freshman in America" was never seen.

Just in case you needed another reason to hate Notre Dame.

I recall that during our undefeated regular season in 1970-71 that Bob Lackey's mug was going to be on the cover except that Jim O'Brien kicked a last second field goal as the Colts beat the Cowboys 16-13 in the Super Bowl.

Its a paradox. We don't need another reason to hate Notre Dame and we can never have enough reasons to hate Notre Dame. :p
