Since freshmen became eligible again in the 1972-'73 season (Earl Tatum's freshman year), MU has had only nine true freshmen average double-digit ppg (10.0 ppg or higher) in the ensuing 42 years.

Without looking up the records, see if you can identify all nine. Obviously old-timers have an advantage here.

I am guessing there will be a couple of surprises in terms of who is on this list as well as a couple of surprise with respect to who is not.

Doc, Travis, Rony Eford, Damon Key, David Boone, Schlunt, Bo?

I think Novak just missed or just made it...no Butch - 8 something.

Dominic James did for sure, and I believe Jerel did also

My history only dates back to the mid-80's so these guys - Jerel, Logtermann, Dominic, Eford, Key, Doc, Hutchens - plus a couple of guys from the 70's.

Not Travis (7.9 ppg), not Schlundt (9.2 ppg). Boone entered MU as a junior. Novak was 7.1 ppg. Not Hutch either (5.5 ppg). And Caribou was right. Not Butch (8.3 ppg).

Yes on Doc (14.0 ppg), Eford (11.0 ppg), Key (13.2 ppg), and Bo (12.2 ppg). Yes also on D.J. (15.3 ppg) and Jerel (11.1 ppg). Good call on Logterman (10.7 ppg)

That leaves two. One should be pretty obvious. Kind of surprised no one has mentioned him.

Dwyane Wade

Wade was a redshirt freshman as is (was) Duane Wilson.

And #10 will be Henry Ellenson.

McIlvaine?

Nope. Not Mac. (8.0 ppg)

Dwyane was technically a sophomore that year.

Was Tony Smith one?

Dwyane was technically a sophomore that year.As Dwyane said when he left, he had 2 more years.....

As Dwyane said when he left, he had 2 more years.....

Remember, he was a partial qualifier and not a redshirt. I believe the system at that point allowed for that extra year if he graduated in four years.

Tony Smith averaged 8.1 ppg as a frosh. Anglavar averaged 7.7 ppg as a frosh. Copa averaged 8.5 ppg his freshman year.

ge1974 - give that man an R. G. Dunn for Trevor (11.9 ppg).

Only one to go. A little hint: the last MU redshirt frosh to averaged over 10.0 ppg before James and McNeal. Honestly, I thought this player's name would be one of the first mentioned, especially since he has been talked about a fair amount this past spring.

As for Wade, yes, he could have played a fourth year as a fifth-year seniors as long as he met specific academic requirements after his fourth year in school.

IIRC Wade was a Prop46, which meant if he maintained a 3.0 GPA or better each year he was at Marquette, he would gain that fourth year back. He did maintain a 3.0 or better while he was here. Unlike Prop48 where you just give up that first year.

Anthony Pieper?

Dwayne Johnson or how about Oluoma Nnamaka?

By the way, great idea on the Trivia question Phantom.

Definitely Wardle

Phantom Warrior
06-16-2015, 10:58 AM
Yup, Wardle it is ((10.3 ppg).

Dwayne Johnson averaged 8.3 ppg, Pieper averaged 4.9 ppg, and Nnamaka averaged 6.7 ppg.

Bottom line - not many incoming frosh, regardless of how high they were ranked coming out of high school, average in double figures in terms of scoring their first year. As I said, only 9 at MU the past 42 years, and the list of who didn't average double digits is both long and impressive.

Great trivia question, unfortunate lesson learned - ha.

Despite the lesson learned, I do think this trivia question next year will read who are the 10 frosh to average double digits. I still won't get them all right, but I think H Ellenson will be on that list.
