NCAA: Syracuse booster provided more than $8,000 in cash to three football and two men’s basketball players for volunteering at YMCA.

Do the violation really surprise any of us?

So is it possible they vacate the elite 8 win against us? ;)

And yet...nothing for North Carolina.

Now I understand they are different types of issues (improper benefits v. academics) but it does make you wonder about priorities. But really, is $8,000 in improper benefits as big a deal as academic fraud meant to keep players eligible?

They were so stupid, they were committing violations during an NCAA investigation. Report really blames Boeheim--didn't follow University drug policies after players tested positive because "they didn't understand the rules". They also had tutors writing papers for athletes and lying about completed community service work for which they received credit. We knew some of this but the report summary is pretty damning.

And with the wins vacated...we won the 2011-2012 Big East Championship

Does Boeheim retire because of this?

Apparently no such luck on the final 4.....Matt Norlander ‏@MattNorlander 2m2 minutes ago
Big picture, the “wins” here for Cuse: No further postseason ban. The 2003 title not affected, and neither is 2013 F4.

Supposedly the time period was 2001 through 2012. 3 major areas (1)Impermissible benefits,
(2) improper drug testing/monitoring and (3) academic improprieties. Jay Bilas is already saying the punishment is too harsh. Cmon Jay, some might think only 9 ACC games for Boeheim next year is too lenient. IMO, this is good, for the coaches and athletic departments that strive hard to follow NCAA rules. (Not to mention the whole Bernie Fine fiasco)

Does Boeheim retire because of this?

I think he will, but will probably give it a couple more years. Make sure all the current and incoming players know that Mike Hopkins will be taking over in 2017. Let Hopkins do most of the recruiting for the next couple classes and get his feet more wet by coaching the Orange during Boeheim's suspension. Once Hopkins does take over, he's only got 2 years of suspension to deal with and a core of players that expected him to be at the helm which should lessen the blow for transfers that would normally come when someone like Boeheim leaves.
