With MU being extremely short on players this year, and short four of the last 5 years, I always find it intriguing to see opposing team's official rosters. St. John's has 13 guys suited up, but 17 players listed on their official roster. MU had 9, now up to 11 with the Mache brothers.
First round of stats is out, nothing earth shattering as not much has happened yet, but Duane Wilson does have 2 early turnovers.
Anyone watching on tv have any idea what they are looking at?

Anyone who is watching know why Duane was taken in the back?
On the play where MU almost lost it and he collided with a St. John's player he hurt his shoulder. He was holding it and asked to come out. They sent Derrick to the table, but it took a little while to make the change.
I think it is his right shoulder.

Is Carlino hurt too?
Yep - hurt his shoulder when he drove to the hoop and got taken out. I don't think he was fouled on the play, but a possible goal tend?

MU leading the rebounding battle 16-11
Mu with 4 turnovers, St. John';s with 4 pts off of those turnovers.
Poor 3pt shooting - MU 1-6, St. John's 1-7.
MU shooting 44.4% from field, St. John's shooting 30% (big part of MU's rebounding lead)
Duane has a band aid on his right shoulder, wonder if they gave him a cortisone shot in the locker room?

Thanks IWB. Cool to get updates like this at the game. It's good to see they are both back but it looks like at least Duane is still hurting. You have to give this team a lot of credit. How are we even in this game?
Next stat check is 3:39 mark, St. John;s up 24-21
MU needs to take care of the ball, 5 turnovers now with 6 points off of those.
MU still up on rebounds 19-16, but need to be better. St. John's has 6 2nd chance points.

JJJ is down too. IWB, I'm starting to think it's because you're sitting right there.
St. John's goes on 5-0 run after MU had tied it up. Jajuan gets hurt on a missed layup, a little too much show time. On the next possession Derrick drove in, went up anticipating the hard contact, but defender backed off completely causing Derrick to lose his balance.
MU now with another turnover....and another
St. John's extends toa 9-0 run before Carlino ends it on a 3pt on a pass from Derrick.
Carlino seems unusually winded. Very winded, sucking air like I have never seen before. I think those weeks off due to the concussion may have really hurt him.

It was a horrible shot by Carlino. He didn't deserve to be bailed out.
Of course, I could say the same on Obepka and his shot when they called Luke's second foul.

That was a total bailout. The only difference was the Carlino foul resulted in two points for St John's.
MU with 7 turnovers in the first half? I think official stat man DOS may have been a little too kind in the last 4 mins of the half.
St. John's with 10 2nd chance points in first half.

Wojo gets T and still goes after refs, could be symbolic for him to get tossed on AL's Night?

Derrick with an ill advised drive and the Carlino with a bad turnover.......yuck
Refs are all keeping an eye on Carlino. After that last foul was called, Corbett and Szelc were both watching him to gauge his reaction. Szelc gave him more attention, even walking closer to the MU huddle to hear what he was saying.

Steve Taylor is rebounding well today. He is a fish out of water when trying to make moves from the high post.
Stat software has Steve with 9 rebounds so far.

No personal stats have been updated in the last 4 minutes. Shows Luke still 1-4 FT's.
Steve has about 13 rebounds.
Check that, stat software is slow, official stats have him at 13, 5 offensive.

For both teams
Marquette was 2nd last in the Big East in free throws with 66%, if it was to stay like this they would take over the cellar.
After Seton Hall's game tonight they are shooting 66.03% from the charity stripe, with MU at 4-12, they are at 65.49%.

Fischer has to work on being strong with the ball. His hands are terrible as he loses the ball frequently.

Fischer has a pretty decent stroke .....no reason for him to struggle that badly from the line

agree completely. every time I watch him shoot I am just befuddled at how he can be so bad from the line. He shoots it a bit flat, but other than that he has a really nice looking shot. He really should be a mid 60% shooter at worst and probably upper 60 to lower 70%. Not sure if it is mind games with him or not.
St. John's 61, Marquette 51. With MU's 7-18 performance from the free throw line, they are now 358-548 on the season, 65.32% which is worst in the Big East.

Actually, Luke has no follow though on his FTs. He spins the ball off his fingers. Taylor is doing the same thing.

Cohen walked right to the bench, sat down and put his face in a shirt or towel for an extended period of time. Juan was sitting to his left. Juan put his arm around Sandy and talked to him for a good couple minutes straight. You could tell Sandy was really down and probably knew he wouldn't be going back in. That is the kind of leadership and the type of teammate Juan has been at MU. He is trying to play through an injury in a tough season, and at the same time help the young guys too. You could really tell it was a tough moment for Sandy, I really felt bad for him.

Sandy had a "baby giraffe" game yesterday. It happens, and I'm glad Juan took to him there. Sandy has had enough success to know he can play at this level, but also knows that he needs to work hard to get to a point where that success becomes more consistent. He'll get there.
As much as this season has stunk, it's gonna help Sandy, Duane, and Luke going forward. Prior to BE play, Luke had only really played in buy games at IU and MU. It's good for him to get beat up a little bit, now he knows how physical he has to become.
And Duane, what a competitor. It's no wonder why his head coach loves him.

I could not get to the game, but on TV, it looked like Sandy was about to cry. That sequence came right after he fouled on the 3 pt attempt.

Yep, which is why I'll be there at 12:40 on Saturday clapping for the seniors. We all wish they were a bit better on the court, but off the court they have represented the university as well as any of us could ask.

These seniors have represented our university with class and dignity. I wish them all the best in the future endeavors. Oh, and by the way, for all of the Derrick Wilson haters out there, I'll bet Rick Pitino would give anything in the world to have him as his starting point guard.

Derrick on the right team would be great. As has been mentioned elsewhere, Virginia's starting point guard has very similar numbers to Derrick. The problem is we don't have offensive options around him. Put Derrick on a team with 3 future NBA players and the team would be great. Put him on a team with none and the team will be crap. Unfortunately, we haven't had any the past two years. Maybe Duane or Luke, but they're still wet behind the ears.

I understand what you are trying to say, but a pass first point guard is supposed to make everyone around him better, not the other way around. I really admire Derrick. I love his effort and his leadership. He's gotten rebounds, he's played the bottom of a zone, he gives up his body, and he is unselfish. What other point guard could you play in the post against a zone and be effective?
However, he is just not an effective point guard, at least for my taste. He is too cautious. He takes 2 or 3 dribbles than what is needed. He never looks like he has a sense of urgency, but I believe he just doesn't possess the vision that is needed as a high major point guard. He does not do a good job of passing ahead. He'll deliver the ball a second or two later than he could have. Honestly, he'd be a great post player. He's tough and he's physical. It's too bad he isn't 8 inches taller. Then again, you can say that about anyone. If he had NBA players around him, we'd be great because of those players. I'm not sure if Derrick would have made them better players. He wouldn't have made mistakes, which would be a good thing.
We've been spoiled with great point guards at Marquette. We went from Tony Miller to Hutchins. Cordell was solid, but then we had Diener then Dominic James. I liked Junior because he was tough and he passed the ball ahead really well. He was a good distributer without many wasted dribbles and he took it upon himself to hit big shots. However, he was a step down from Miller, Hutchins, Diener, and Dominic. Strictly talking about skill, Derrick was a step down from Junior. Having said that, I'm glad he's on our team. He represents Marquette the right way. He does whatever is asked of him. He is a great role player. He doesn't seem to have an ego and I think he's been a great influence on the kids.

Junior benefited from having NBA players like Jimmy, Jae, Vander, and DJO around him. With comparable surrounding talent I believe Derrick would have won just as much. Junior was a better distributor, Derrick is a better defender, both are poor shooters
Derrick won't win you many games, but he won't lose you many games either. The problem is we haven't had anyone else around him that will win you games. Ideally Derrick would be a backup. On the right team he's fine as the fourth or fifth best starter. Sadly we aren't that kind of team.

Yep, Junior was a better PG as he had the court vision that Derrick lacks. Junior was also more of a treat to score than Derrick. As you note here, Derrick often ends up in the open with the ball after 15 seconds left on the clock and the offense has to reset itself while Derrick pounds the ball on the floor. That's been very frustrating.
