Haven't seen this game in 29 years.

I had just made up my mind to attend Marquette about a week before that game. I felt that was my first game as a true Warrior.

I remember the intro and the "old fashioned shootout" like it was yesterday. Also remember the "Pops Sims is setting them on fire" comment.

One of the most crushing defeats I can recall.

I was at the game the day before when MU beat Dayton. I recall them filming the Cowboy scene after that game. Imagine having back to back games with the second game vs the #1 team in the country.

I know some feel if Majerus would have won this game vs. North Carolina, things could have really changed for the program.

MU played Dayton the day before the UNC game and beat Dayton.

Boy, do I remember this.

Back then, the AP and UPI still just did a Top 20. An upstart newspaper called USA Today had started to do a Top 25 and going into the weekend, MU was something like 23 or 24.

Friday night, they beat Dayton setting the stage for the UNC game which we all sadly know the result. If memory serves me correct, MU beat Hartford the following Tuesday.

Regardless, had MU beaten UNC, they would have easily been a Top 15 team and maybe they make the dance. And maybe Majerus keeps his job and things are totally different than they were.

Yep. Just mixing up my memory. Back to my point though. MU lost several games shortly thereafter. The beginning of the end for Rick.

Thanks for posting this. It's always fun to see the old MECCA floor and old MU games.

Looking at it closer, I forgot what a heartbreaker of a year that was.

L @ Madison 75-74
L Bradley 66-64
L @ Kansas St 56-55
L UNC
L @ND in OT 72-70

18-10 record with these 5 close losses. Should have been an NCAA team for sure.
