Not sure how I feel about the 8pm games. No rush to get home from work and back to the BC.
I guess easy for the Chicago fans to get here too.

Creighton is on a 5 game losing streak, but their last game was a 1 point loss to Seton Hall.

I predict a big night from Fischer, and MU wins by double digits getting to win #10 and a 2-2 conference record.

I'm interested in seeing Toby Hegner, a frosh from Berlin, Wisconsin.
He is their third leading scorer, and is one of only two players on the roster to have started all 17 games.

Tonight's starting lineups....

Referees: Michael Stephens, John Gaffney, Mike Nance

MU starting 5: Duane Wilson, Derrick Wilson, Matt Carlino, Steve Taylor, Luke Fischer

Creighton Starting 5: Austin Chatman, Avery Dingman, James Milikin, Will Artino, Toby Hegner

Game on!

Foul on Luke was right call from my seat.

Not arms necessarily, but Toby Hegner has the skinniest upper body I have ever seen - waist, torso, shoulders - odd observation I know, but it just doesn't look right for a guy that size.

That starting lineup stunk. Complete waste of four minutes.

IWB
01-14-2015, 08:21 PM
MU 1-7 from field, 0-5 from 3pt. Carlino 0-3, 0-2 from 3 and missed a layup. If he's not shooting well pull him!

IWB

Luke drawing significant amount of contact down low, pleading with officials but no calls.

If Derrick Wilson is hitting threes, this could be a good night.

so I don't get the game out here so just checking it on the gamecast. what is the story with jjj and sandy? did either see any time in the first half? doesn't look like it from the box score. can you give a brief recap of the first half?

MUMac

Juan had a forgettable last two minutes of the half to give Creighton life.

Wojo and this officiating crew have been barking back and forth all half. Gaffney remains a waste of an official.

JaJuan has a very short leash tonight.

Everyone played...Sandy made a 3 sand JJ made 1 bucket but his decision making wasn't good.

If MU lives by the 3 I think they might die by the 3. Everybody but Luke tried at least 1.

Creighton can't shoot that badly in the 2nd half......

did I read that right, that there has only been 2 free throws in the game?? not sure I have ever seen that in a half. JJJ throwing the ball around or defensive lapses? surprised to see juan not in the starting lineup.

dubs98

thanks marked...evidently my screen is not scrolling to the last two players on MU on the gamecast. Is Creighton really that bad this year? do they have anyone that could help them next year or are they in trouble for the next few?

Creighton is big on the front line and Wojo matched that.

JJJ's struggles were offensively.

For JJJ, bad shot and turnovers. He and Derrick ran as bad of a 2-on-1 break as you're going to see.

Luke has to be smarter with his fouls. Too important of a player for us.

IWB
01-14-2015, 09:16 PM
Agree, JJJ made some bad decisions. Too concerned about 'showtime', needs to just play ball and hustle back on D.

MU went to the 1-3-1 zone with a long Juan Anderson at the top of the key and it caused a lot of problems for Creighton. The Blue Jays went almost 9 minutes in first half without a field goal.

IWB
01-14-2015, 09:18 PM
Talked to several people at the half including MU people - not thrilled about the officiating, especially the calls on Luke.

The second foul on Luke was really weak. Stephens is a better official than to call that. Especially with what he lets Creighton get away with on d. That second foul on Luke was in getting if me.

Derrick with a huge block on a three forcing the shot clock to expire - he's having a pretty solid game.

Stat time....with MU up 41-33 at the 11:43 mark....

MU losing rebounding battle 27-25.
MU has only 4 ft attempts on the night (3-4)
MU has 11 assists on 15 made baskets
MU has 7 turnovers, 4 of which are on Juan Anderson
While MU has 11 fast break points, they only have 6 points in the paint - very unusual for this team
MU shooting 40.5% for the game, but Creighton is at 30%

couple of three balls from duane Wilson. could really use getting him going from outside going forward. has luke not been getting many touches? only three shots so far I think?

MUMac
01-14-2015, 09:38 PM
Luke has sat a lot with foul trouble.

IWB
01-14-2015, 09:39 PM
They have been pretty physical with Luke down low, tough to get the ball in to him.

Creighton's Toby Hegner from Berlin, WI is getting hot - hit is last three shots and is up to 10 pts.

Creighton bumping Luke a bunch.

IWB

Should have been a foul, guy had Juan's arm that whole time, Juan actually lost his balance when he was pulling to get away from him.

IWB

That was the quickest 5 second call I have seen, it was Stephen's again, right?

MUMac

Yes it was Stephens. He has been really bad tonight.

every time I look at the update on the gamecast, it says MU turnover. Creighton playing decent defense or are we that careless with the ball today. might be glad I am not watching this.

MUMac

Duane with no look pass and Juan wasn't looking. A forgettable game for Juan today.

Careless with the ball. Bad basketball here, tough to watch.

IWB
01-14-2015, 09:55 PM
Careless in some, no question. MU has 14 turnovers on the night, 5 by Juan, 3 by Jajuan.

It's just brutal basketball. I thought last year was bad. This year is starting to approach it.

Markedman

You are glad you aren't watching this....our offense is ...offensive....Bluejays sagging off of Derrick and clogging up the paint. Juan has been horrible....JJ is trying but isn't doiung anything...Taylor nothing....Luke nothing

There were stretches of the first half that looks so good I couldn't believe it was the same team. Now - only 16 points in the second half with 3:00 mins left.

I said to a friend the other day that this MU team is the biggest tease, every game they will go on a run to get close, tie it up, or take a lead, and then in the 2nd half they completely blow it. It is really hard to watch, and honestly I expect a let down every time now. It really makes me appreciate past teams and just how special that 9 year run was, the last two college basketball seasons haven't been the same for me without MU being a factor.

IWB
01-14-2015, 10:01 PM
Artino completely stepped out of bounds before he scored that hoop. I was watching Gaffney amd he was watching players, never looked down. Officiating could not be worse.

MU was moving up & down court so much differently in the first half from the second. First half they were moving and pushing the ball up & down court. 2nd half they have slowed it down and continue to do so. Is it because of personnel? Is it because of foul trouble?

Certainly can argue either philosophy. I personally like not calling a to. They got a great look too, just didn't fall.

"Ginooooobili.....I mean Carliiiiiino!!!!" What a stale performance by Marquette, but a win is a win and we could not afford to lose this one. Also disappointed with the sushi crowd tonight, geez, get up and give MU the advantage of a home court crowd.

Exactly. MU looked like they would blow Creighton away in the first half. Lethargic once MU got the lead. There seemed to be plenty of people at the BC, but the crowd just seemed so hesitant to raise the noise level down the stretch, not counting the final 2 minutes.

I will agree so far, but DePaul's body of work still belongs with us (and is still the worst of anyone in the league). Also, our zone can frustrate teams enough to drag them into a rock fight. I would love to see the offense return to the non-conference level of performance, and cut out the damn turnovers.

Markedman

These slow down half court games where they pack the paint are going to be very difficult for MU. The ball movement was just non existent tonight........Derrick made 2 corner 3s and they still sagged off of him the whole game daring him to shoot.

He played a good floor game so I'm not picking on Derrick.....it is just with our present group we can't get the other team to play us honestly on defense and use Luke in the post.

Juan, Taylor and JJ were really bad tonight.....maybe it was the layoff? I hope so.....

I know he didn't look great in his limited minutes but if we are struggling so much offensively why not use Sandy more to at least keep the defense honest to if nothing more open up a few passing lanes into Luke.

I want Sandy to play a bit more, but there were no kick outs to the wing today because the ball was never entered to Luke. I think Sandy can hit open shots, but I do not believe that his presence on the floor opens things up for Luke. Teams will likely allow Sandy to take whatever open looks he would get from a Luke pass out.

Glad I wasn't alone in thinking these refs were terrible. Sometimes can be hard to tell from the upper deck.

I knew we were in for a ref show when they had to look at Derrick tripping over Dingman for three minutes.

The refs were just hideous tonight. Juan's third foul (an out of control Kreklow jumping into him), the Derrick foul call on him tying up Artino, Luke's second foul, a moving screen called on Juan when he was set, an uncalled moving screen on a late Creighton three.

I didn't even think about it at the time but assuming we had a few to give wojo shouldve been calling for us to foul at the end. Wojo admitted to this error in post game. Fortunately it didnt cost us.

That was my big question too. Cohen was 1/1, hitting the only 3 he attempted. Is his defense that bad? There were a lot open 3s to hit out there and seemingly no one to take them at times in the second half.

I was calling for us to foul as we only had 4 team fouls.

Take the win and move on.
