I spoke with Tony at the banquet and he is totally in the mix. They will not do better. Larry Brown would be a recruiting nightmare based on his age. He would be 2 and done--hell, he was that way when he was younger. Tony there this weekend, too.

Larry Brown last coached a college team in 1988. Not even BYU kids were born at that time.

About time SMU came to their senses and looked at realistic options and not coaches on borrowed time in their career. Brown over Benford would be insane for people living in the real world.

Reading the SMU board, a few fans on there suggest they hire Brown AND Benford, basically convincing Benford to move from an assistant role at MU to SMU.

:p

It seems some of the fans are as clueless as their admins at that school.

It's a no brainer. College programs looking to establish themselves always find success turning to a 71 year old who last coached a college program 24 years ago. Since John Wooden has passed on and they couldn't lure Dean Smith out of retirement, Larry Brown is their best option.

Tony deserves this job, and Buzz has been pulling out all of the stops trying to help make it happen. I just don't understand the interest in Brown. Yes, they want to make a big impression in the Big East, but as pointed out above, Larry Brown is 71 and hasn't coached a college team since before all of today's college players were born.

Come on SMU, be smart here and hire Tony Benford.

If SMU really wants to upgrade its program for the long haul, Larry Brown would be a mistake. He might attract some good players early on, but his staying power is limited and his age is a factor in many aspects other than just how long he would stay. Need a guy who brings some enrgy. SMU, meet Tony Benfor,
