The Lady Techsters haven't won a title since 1988, but went to the Final Four 4 times in the 1990s. For a 23-year-old to take over that program is amazing. He'll be barely older than the players he's coaching.

From a PR perspective, it makes sense. I won't say he's paid his dues, how can you at that age, but he's had some great tutelage and his last name carries more weight than anyone in the sport not named Auriemma. If he succeeds, Louisiana Tech looks brilliant, and if he fails, it's easy to chalk it up to taking a chance on someone too young.

He will need to be careful, though. That's a tough situation for any young man to be in, where you are effectively a supervisor to a group of women that are just younger than you.

Maybe to give his mom a chance to see him coach before things progress much further with her situation - maybe they have an assistant who is more or less a co-head coach. Just a guess.

The stakes are lower in women's ball. It is still pretty crazy to hire somebody his age, but when Terri Mitchell took over at Marquette, she was an assistant, the head coach left, and she was hired in short order. She has been around for fifteen years since. None of the drama we have just seen with the men's coach hiring. So schools can take more risks and have more leeway. They do not have to fire a coach after one or two bad years either.

His Mom took over the Tennessee Women's program at the age of 22. That seemed to work out ok. :D
