So I was bored and with Marquette not being in the tournament this year I needed something to do so I looked at NCAA tournament credits over the last 6 years from the old Big East vs. the New Big East and I was interested to find that if the Big East as it is currently set up was able to keep all of their credits from the last 6 years (which they weren't) they would actually have made more this year per school than what they made in their peak in the Old Big East setup...

In 2011 the Old Big East hit their peak and made $26.1 Million in NCAA tournament credits, which when divided by 16 schools came out to $1,631,250 per school... If you take the NCAA credits from the 10 new schools from 2008-2013 they would have earned $17.5 Million in credits, which when divided by 10 schools would be $1,750,000 per school. For reference in 2012 the Old Big East earned $24.9 Million in credits which is $1,556,250 per school.

Now with all of this said it doesn't really matter because Butler left all of their credits in the Horizon League and A-10, Xavier left theirs in the A-10, and Creighton left theirs in the MVC... The Catholic 7 were able to keep there tough however which for 2013 were valued at $8,750,000 or $875,000 per school (assuming they share with all 10 schools?)

2014 will be the first year that all 10 of the members schools credits will stay in house so it's important that they collect as many as possible, dating back to 2008 this collection of 10 schools never earned less than 10 credits in any tournament. I think they may struggle to get 10 this year but who knows... It will be interesting to watch how things develop and if this conference can keep up the strong run they have had, however financially it appears they have a chance to maintain or surpass what the old Big East was doing.

Sorry for making this so long, I thought it was interesting and some of you may enjoy!

How do the play-in games work for credits? I assume Xavier gets 1, or is it only if you win a game you get a credit?

It's. One credit, win or lose.

You get a credit for every game you play - even the opening round games in Dayton.
