Wow. Just saw this. Will be interesting to see who the candidates are and what their backgrounds consist of. Will we see a laymen as a president or will it be another Jesuit Priest?

He was very good at some things at MU. He did a great job on academic and spiritual fronts. He was not good with alums and basketball. I hope he does very well in his contemplated pastoral work. I hope this gives Buzz a better environment so he can continue here for a long time.

This is fantastic news actually! Can Larry be far behind?? The Board of Trustees better get this right this time! get a basketball guy! Period.

Not even close to the top of things they need to consider but could be good for keeping Buzz long term.

Clear him and Pilarz weren't on the same page. It would be a shame if Williams had to leave to and then they could just call mulligans on the whole LaX program.

Too big a step up from Scranton I wonder?

I understand that the timing was not right for Fr. Lannon last time, but I think it will be this time around and that should be a good thing for basketball (and the university as whole).

I would love Tim Lannon but he is President of Creighton in his hometown. I cannot see that happening.

What about the BC Pres?

He must leave the BC AD behind, he played a key role in the exodus to ACC.

Buzz has got this....don't worry. All is well in MU land. :) They aren't headless....Larry is leading them! Into a brick wall...

The MU BOT shipped Leahy out with the DiUlio regime. No way. Lannon is my call. Plays well with all--alums, students and academics. Should never have been passed over to start with.

You don't get shipped out to BC. BC and Georgetown are elite destinations. You get shipped to MU. Or Scranton or Santa Clara.

Lol...different time, different place. He will never be welcomed back in Milwaukee. And that is all I will say.

Leaving at the end of the 1st semester. That is truly odd......

Would that be kind of awkward timing for him to jump from Creighton at the inception of the new BE? Wouldn't MU take a pass due to that alone? Again, that's assuming he would want to come to MU in the first place.

VP of academic affairs at Fairfield looks like a rising star. Although, MU has gone after Presidents of smaller schools in the past (Xavier, Wheeling, Scranton).

I wouldn't at all mind seeing a layperson in the role if the right candidate can be found.

MU would have to change their by-laws. It is currently written that it has to be a Jesuit. I do not have a problem with that at all, I prefer it to be a Jesuit, unless the right Jesuit can not be found.

By laws were changed recently to allow for a layperson as reported by JS.

The VP of academic affairs at Fairfield is a Jesuit. Rev. Paul Fitzgerald

As mentioned, the by-laws were amended in 2011. According to JSOnline (http://www.jsonline.com/news/education/next-marquette-president-may-not-be-lay-person-b99103491z1-224727492.html), The bylaws state that "the president shall be a member of the Catholic Church, and the board of trustees shall give preference to the Society of Jesus."
