When asked who is the biggest surprise commit of the early signing period:

"Reggie Rankin: My biggest surprise from the early signing period was JaJuan Johnson (Memphis, Tenn./Southwind) signing with Marquette. I was surprised Johnson decided to leave Memphis, let alone the South altogether. The beloved Memphis Tigers were all over Johnson, but fit and timing are important factors in recruiting. And in this case, it boiled down to timing. After the Tigers landed local wing players Markel Crawford (Memphis, Tenn./Melrose) and Nick King (Memphis, Tenn./East) the scholarships for the position were gone. There was also a strong mutual interest between Johnson and Texas. But when the Longhorns decided to pull out, that left visits to Miami and Alabama, who most recruiting experts thought were in the lead. But the Golden Eagles built player and family relationships and had a great visit with Johnson during Midnight Madness. In the end, Buzz Williams and his staff did a great job coming from behind to land Johnson, who is a terrific, young wing scorer with tremendous upside."
