Any idea why this took into the season to figure out?

I like Buzz surrounding himself with another guy with head coaching experience. Despite losing all three assistants in the offseason, we still have what seems like a very strong staff.

Health concerns maybe?

Monarch did not exactly leave at the ideal time. Had he left right after the season, Buzz could have looked for candidates at the Final Four. Shortly before the season, with no previous plans to replace an assistant, it is hard to tell who is available.

Buzz has his old sage in Wainwright.

Hopefully he'll be too busy that weekend to bother looking for assistants :D

Per chance, this is not only timed to the start of the season, but also to the start of the quiet periods? Advantage on the recruiting trail to put some extra feet on the trail like when Buzz hired Monarch originally.

Any idea why this took into the season to figure out?

Several reasons, mainly timing.

1) As stated above, Monarch departure was not exactly great timing. Coaches are gearing up for the season, not looking to move.

2) Monarch situation wasn't the cleanest, had to wait to see how it played out in regards to HR, legal reviews etc etc.

3) When finally getting the clearance to move on, there were some coaches that were approached, but that late in the game, some wanted certain assurances that MU just couldn't give them.

Bottom line, very tough to say, "Drop everything and join us at MU, ignore the fact that your kids are already in school, there is tension etc etc"
