Hearing that Isaac Chew will join the Marquette staff. Chew has now gone from Missouri to Illinois to Marquette in the span of 2 months

Buzz' ties to Chew go back to the days at Indian Hills, with Billy Kennedy helping him get the job there. Obviously Buzz has always been tight with Kennedy, but his relationship with Chew began at that time, when Isaac was hired at Indian Hills.

Chew is the guy who supposedly recruited most of the talent from last year's Murray State team.

So he coached Buycks?

Clearly this is a guy who has a future as a D1 head coach.

This is a pretty nice summary of how Buzz got this done.

Sounds like a talented guy. Not to be a contrarian, but he is coming to MU after only 2 months at U of I and it is not a promotion, but a hefty raise? Even considering that he's pretty tight with Buzz, wouldn't you want to strangle the guy if you were Croce? And if the circumstances were switched and he was at MU and left after only 2 months wouldn't we want to strangle the guy? Again, sounds like a great get, but I can't help but feel a certain level of discomfort about the whole thing.

It is a promotion as he will be the top assistant at a back to back Sweet 16 school. had Tony Benford been hired at SMU and not North Texas, he would have been at MU to start with.

Yes, cash talks big time, but don't ever second guess Buzz' relationships and how deep they run.

Two lines in that article struck me:

"Second, Marquette has an absurd basketball budget and isn't afraid to spend." - For all the bashing that Fr. Pilarz and the adminstration get on the boards, if they were really that anti-bball program, you think they would have cut the budget some that it might have been more difficult to offer the salary that this article insinuates we gave Chew. Not saying they don't deserve some critique, but just need to qualify how much.

"With Marquette clearly in the midst of a win-now mode..." - I don't know if I quite understand this comment. Anyone else care to weigh in on what they think the writer meant?

Probably just an assumption, since they went hard after a top assistant. Better than lose-now mode.

I know some critics of Fr. Pilarz feel he is trying to degrade the program. I may be lumped into a critic, but I do not feel that way. My issue is more tied to the "changes" in academics and the retroactiveness that has been reported. I don't believe he is trying to downgrade, but I do wonder what the problem is that these changes will solve.

As to the last quote, I am guessing it is tied in part to the continued reshuffling of conferences as much as anything else. MU must win to remain a player in the leagues. Just a hunch.

It could be that Illinois has had a few down years and Marquette has been successful in recent years.

So he coached Buycks?

No, he left the year Buycks arrived.
