Henry Ellenson Named Wayman Tisdale Award Finalist
Forward named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for seventh time
Milwaukee – BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Year and All-America candidate Henry Ellenson has been named one of five finalists for the Integris Wayman Tisdale Award, the United States Basketball Writers Association announced Monday afternoon.
The Rice Lake, Wisconsin, native is one of the top performing freshmen in the nation. He is ranked third in rebounding (9.8 rpg., first in BIG EAST and 26th in nation) nationally among first-year players and 13th in scoring (16.6 ppg., fourth in BIG EAST). His 15 double-doubles are the 15th most in college basketball (most in BIG EAST) and is the second-highest total by a freshman.
Ellenson is currently ranked among the league leaders in six different categories (scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and minutes per game). He surpassed Dominic James’ (473, 2005-06) Marquette freshman year scoring mark on Feb. 27 and now owns 481 points as a Golden Eagle. He reached the rebounding total of Bo Ellis (264) earlier this season and is ranked among the program’s top-10 newcomers in 11 categories.
Ellenson was also named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the seventh time (fourth-best total in league history) on Monday morning. He averaged 17.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in two outings last week, highlighted by his 16th double-double of the season. Former Syracuse star Carmelo Anthony (2002-03) holds the single-season record with 10 weekly honors.
The late Wayman Tisdale was a three-time USBWA All-American at the University of Oklahoma. Following a stint on the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team, he played 12 seasons in the NBA before retiring in 1997 to focus on a blossoming jazz music career. In March 2007, he was diagnosed with cancer and, following a courageous and difficult battle that included the amputation of his right leg in 2008, he passed away in May 2009.
